Born in Prague (1948), emigrated to the UK in 1969.

Studied in the UK, completing a doctoral thesis on Comecon integrationat St Antony's College, Oxford.

Before joining Daiwa in 1996, worked as an analyst at FRE/RL, Munich, and as Eastern Europe editor at the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), London.

Have published extensively on Central Europe, Balkans and Russia.
