Yakov Smotritsky was born in Moscow, served in Soviet Army, graduated
from the Moscow Institute of Physics & Engineering, and defended
his
Ph.D. thesis related to the subject of optimal configuration of
electrical transmission lines with consideration of their environmental
impact.
In 1980 Dr. Smotritsky emigrated to the United States where he
consequently worked in Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences
(NYU
1980-1981); EBASCO Services Inc. (Nuclear Power Plant Construction
Company, 1981-1985); Citibank (Software Development Group for Department
of Financial Control 1986-1992);
In 1993 Dr Smotritsky received National Science Foundation Award (NSF
Award - #9362170: Adaptation of GIS for Location of Surface
Transportation Objects) /GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems;
Surface Transportation Objects Category includes: highways, railroads,
oil and gas pipelines, and electrical transmission lines/ and currently
is working for Academic Computing Services Department of New York
University.
